Scams are crimes that involve strangers targeting unsuspecting victims and lying to them in order to illegally receive money or personal information. Oftentimes, the criminal is posing as a government or university official, or a job recruiter.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in a new country and unfamiliar with the way its government and institutions operate makes international students more vulnerable. Scam artists can target international students and attempt to deceive the student with immigration scams and job scams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Know the red flags<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red flags are warning signs that usually indicate danger ahead. Look out for these common red flags in requests and appeals by email or phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emails appear in your spam folder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Common email providers like Gmail and Microsoft Outlook do a pretty good job of screening out scam attempts. In general, you can trust the technology and assume the emails are not worth your time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The email is in English and there are spelling and grammar mistakes<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The caller or emailer requests unnecessary personal information related to a job opportunity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0companies <\/span><b><i>will not<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ask for your age, gender, birth date, home address or other identifiers in a legitimate recruitment email.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The scammer says there is a problem that you didn\u2019t know about <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The person might tell you that you are in trouble; you owe money to the government; you have a computer virus; or that there is a problem with one of your online accounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The scammer emphasizes immediate action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scammer will often threaten or intimidate you into taking action now, warning that if you don\u2019t you will be in trouble. This doesn\u2019t give you time to verify their identity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The scammer asks you to pay them in a specific way &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the scam type, usually they want you to pay them in the form of gift cards, money transfers or some other unusual form of payment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Watch out for spoofing and phishing tactics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Spoofing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an especially sophisticated deception involving phone numbers and email addresses. Using technology, scam artists can make it appear as if they are calling from a legitimate government phone number or contacting you from an official email address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider this victim\u2019s story from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA local student received a phone call from the FBI office in La Crosse, WI. The caller told the student that she was being investigated for tax fraud&#8230;(A) Google search confirmed that the number was the La Crosse FBI office. She was told that failure to pay would result in her being arrested and immediately deported\u2026She was told to purchase gift cards and give the gift card numbers to the scammers. They immediately transferred the balances.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beware that you can not trust someone based on the phone number that appears in your smartphone or even the email address that appears in your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Phishing <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is similar to spoofing. It\u2019s when an actual person poses as a trusted source, either via email or phone, to convince you to share your sensitive information with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many common scams involve phishing or spoofing or both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Know the common scams<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>1) Recruitment scams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Some commission-based recruiters may tell you that you must go through them to get a student visa or gain acceptance to a US school. While you can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to go through a recruiter, it is not a requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) Immigration scams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The caller claims to be part of a US government agency such as Homeland Security or US Citizenship and Immigration Services. They may ask you to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay immigration fees via money transfer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give Form I-9 information over the phone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay to download free immigration forms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3) Deportation and arrest scams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-The caller may claim the student has done something wrong and threaten to arrest or deport the student unless some sort of restitution is made, often through gift cards or wire transfers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4) Credit Score Scams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding out your credit score requires you to submit sensitive personal information to credit bureaus. Scammers take advantage of this by setting up \u201cfree credit score\u201d services online that steal your personal and financial information and often lead to identity theft. Only use trusted companies, such as your bank or credit union, your credit card company, or the website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freecreditreport.com\/homepage2?bcd=ad_c_sem_427_476381584746&amp;k_id=_k_CjwKCAiAs92MBhAXEiwAXTi2531wMR1TmH2Ezxo-V0GWCcQt39zkjzf3s38TEMYUu20Watj2E6GBORoCiVkQAvD_BwE_k_&amp;k_kw=aud-942381786866:kwd-431487827166&amp;k_mt=p&amp;pc=sem_fcr_google&amp;cc=sem_fcr_google_ad_379284604_25662578044_476381584746_aud-942381786866:kwd-431487827166_p___k_CjwKCAiAs92MBhAXEiwAXTi2531wMR1TmH2Ezxo-V0GWCcQt39zkjzf3s38TEMYUu20Watj2E6GBORoCiVkQAvD_BwE_k_&amp;ref=brandtrm&amp;awsearchcpc=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAs92MBhAXEiwAXTi2531wMR1TmH2Ezxo-V0GWCcQt39zkjzf3s38TEMYUu20Watj2E6GBORoCiVkQAvD_BwE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freecreditreport.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is owned by the credit bureau Experian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5) Job opportunity scams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; In this common scam, someone offers you a great job opportunity, sponsored position or unpaid internship with the promise of future job sponsorship. The scam is that they ask you to pay money in advance or work for free for an extended period in order to receive reimbursed wages. This is a warning sign. Legitimate employers will not ask you to pay money for a job or internship opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5) Rental listing scams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posing as landlords, a scam artist may get you to place a deposit on a property that does not exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6) Prize scams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; They say you\u2019ve won money and that you have to pay a fee first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7) Check scams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Someone sends you a check and asks you to send a portion back. This is always a scam. Even if your bank deposits the check, don\u2019t be fooled. It can take banks a while to figure out that the check was fake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8) Identity theft: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This age-old scam is just as common outside the international student community as it is within. Someone will use deception or intimidation to get you to divulge sensitive information such as your birthday, your visa number, or your social security number. They then use your information to open accounts, often with credit card companies, and use your identity to buy goods and services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just a few of the common scams. Beware that scam artists are coming up with new ideas daily. The bottom line is this: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-artivcal-content\">\n<h2><b>Fight back with a \u201cS.C.A.M.\u201d of your own<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice University\u2019s Office of International Students and Scholars has a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oiss.rice.edu\/scams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great suggestion for how to respond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It involves fighting a scam with a \u201cS.C.A.M.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S.C.A.M. stands for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stop<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel you are being pressured to divulge personal information or send a payment, stop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Collect Caller Information <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for the caller or emailer\u2019s name, agency, and contact info. Say you must verify this information before you proceed further, and hang up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alert Authorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Contact your university\u2019s international office or police department to determine if the call or email is a legitimate request.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make a report<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Your international office or police department can help you determine the best way to report the scam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, stay in close contact with your international office and be certain to read any emails you receive from them.
